Catalysts for Sealants
Sealants are widely used in construction, automotive, electronics, and industrial applications due to their outstanding flexibility, weatherability, and resistance to temperature extremes. Dorf Ketal‘s Tyzor® catalysts provide high-performance curing, crosslinking, and adhesion enhancement in neutral-cure silicone formulations, particularly those based on Room-Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) technologies.
Tyzor® titanates function as multifunctional additives in RTV silicone sealants. Their primary roles include acting as curing catalysts, crosslinkers, water scavengers, and adhesion promoters. In neutral-cure systems—especially alkoxy-based formulations—they serve as environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional organotin compounds, which are increasingly restricted due to toxicity concerns. Titanates provide comparable performance with lower ecological and health risks.
A typical neutral-cure RTV silicone sealant includes hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (OH-PDMS), alkoxy-functional silanes (such as methyltrimethoxysilane, or MTMS), and a titanate catalyst. When exposed to atmospheric moisture, the titanate accelerates the crosslinking of silanol groups with alkoxy silanes, resulting in a durable, elastic silicone network. Tyzor® catalysts ensure consistent curing even under variable humidity and temperature conditions.

Furthermore, Tyzor® catalysts help address VOC and REACH compliance for global markets by eliminating the need for volatile amines or high-toxicity curing agents. In oxime- or acetoxy-based systems, where cure byproducts like MEKO or acetic acid can raise safety or regulatory concerns, Dorf Ketal is actively developing new titanate-based alternatives to extend the benefits of tin-free chemistry across all RTV technologies.
Whether used in curtain wall glazing, expansion joints, or industrial gaskets, Tyzor® catalysts enable formulators to achieve a balance of processing flexibility, mechanical strength, and environmental compliance—setting a new standard for performance in the silicone sealant industry.
